Super Talent outs 250MB/sec, long-lived SSDs

Super Talent TeraDrive stays fast for its lifespan

Super Talent late Thursday rolled out a new class of solid-state drive for itself that it expects will help those with very high workloads. The TeraDrive FT2 runs on a new, high-speed controller from SandForce that will not only deliver peak read speeds of 250MB per second but do so for its lifetime. Most SSDs' performance gradually degrades without software improvements as inefficient writes gradually force longer seek times.

All of the 2.5-inch SATA III drives in the range have techniques to level out the wear on their flash cells and have a mean time between failures of more than 1 million hours. Buyers can also pick between cheaper, denser but slightly shorter-lived multi-level cell (MLC) versions or longer-lasting single-level cell (SLC) equivalents.

Both MLC and SLC drives come in 50GB and 100GB capacities, but only MLC is available for a 200GB edition. Pricing isn't mentioned, but mass production of the drives should start in March.
