DiskTools Pro 3.6.0 adds 5X performance to defrag tool

updated 09:40 pm EST, Thu January 21, 2010

New version can scan, defrag unmounted media

Macware has released DiskTools Pro 3.6.0, updating the disk utility software for the Mac. The utility defragments drives, runs back-ups and repairs bad sectors. It does its work, including sector repair and defragmentation, on the active Mac OS volume without requiring booting from an external volume or disk.

The primary new feature in v3.6.0 is an improved defrag tool -- it scans files up to 5X faster while utilizing the CPU resources much less when scanning and defragmenting. It can now see which files are defragmented and can alert a user to any files that fail to defrag, with error code explanations provided. Defragmentation can also be quickly cancelled in v3.6.0 -- it does not have to wait until the entire file is completely defragmented.

Also new to DiskTools 3.6.0 is a preference file inspector and a defrag report, which exports to TextEdit or Clipboard. The latest version can now scan and repair bad sectors on hard-disk media that is not mounted on the system. Version 3.6.0 also integrates a description table in a floating window for common Mac OS error codes.

DiskTools Pro 3.6.0 requires Mac OS X 10.3.9 or higher and works with Snow Leopard. It is $80 to download and is available in disk form at major retailers.
