ASUS may ship Eee Pad tablet in June below $500

updated 08:35 am EST, Wed January 20, 2010

ASUS Tegra-based tablet to see Computex

An apparent leak ASUS has narrowed down the launch of its rumored tablet, the Eee Pad, down to June. Industry contacts now claim the company hopes to launch the device at Taiwan's Computex, which this year starts June 1st. It would also be aimed at netbook pricing and would cost somewhere below $500 after being made by ASUS' manufacturing side, Pegatron.

The sources for DigiTimes reiterate that the Eee Pad will use an NVIDIA Tegra, likely the Tegra 2, and so will use a platform other than Windows. It's not yet known if it would use Linux, which early Eee PC netbooks used, or else a mobile OS like Android. Most tablets shown at CES were running some form of Android.

Many expect the Eee Pad, if completed, to invariably compete against Apple's rumored project. However, one of the earliest rumors has it using a screen between 4 and 7 inches, or well below the larger and likely more expensive American challenger.

    between 4 and 7 inches

$500 for a 7 inch netbook tablet, good luck with that. Apple will want to sell there tablet as cheap as possible to maximize iTunes sales, i expect a very competitive pricing from Apple.

    Apple pricing

Apple have repeatedly laid the groundwork for a price well above $500, arguing that you can't make anything of quality at that price-point. Mossberg and Wu seem agreed at a price around $999, and they have more access than most. Apple have never sold at "competitive" prices choosing rather, to emphasize the quality of integration and manufacture.

    Competitive prices

They never had an appstore either, every device that is coupled to the appstore has a competitive price or is low enough to not matter.

    Hardware without new software

A tablet requires a new type of software. If you just slap desktop software on the device, it will be a failure even if they are giving it away.
