hField releases Wi-Fire Connection Manager 2.0 for Mac

updated 11:40 pm EST, Tue January 19, 2010

Wi-Fire software now runs in Mac's menu bar

hField Technologies has released Wi-Fire Connection Manager 2.0, an update to the software utility that works with the company's Wi-Fire external antenna. The latest version now runs from an icon in the Mac OS X menu bar, similar to Apple’s Airport, and displays information on any supported connections that are within range. The interface provides data on both the strength and quality of each signal, with options for direct connection or disconnection from each available network.

When used with the company’s Wi-Fire external antenna, the system is claimed to extend wireless range to 1,000 feet. The device is also said to be capable of finding signals as weak as -98 dBm.

The software upgrade is compatible with Mac OS X 10.4 or higher and is available for download from hfield.com, while the Wi-Fire adapter can be purchased for $60.

    Hate

I hate the multitude of connection managers that exist under Windows for Wifi, why can't this company just make use of the built in software rather than dumping their own mess on top.

    Didn't work for me

I bought one of these a little over two years ago and it didn't work. I immediately contacted tech support and they couldn't get it going, and advised that I wait for a software update "that would fix my problem" rather than return it for a refund. I wanted it to work so I waited. Every six months or so I checked for an update that would work, and finally -- two years later -- an update did get it to work. But then it worked no better than my built-in wi-fi, in fact it worked exactly the same, so it was no use to me. hField refused to give me a refund or a replacement new product that supposedly would improve my reception, and that left me with a pretty bitter feeling toward the company. I flatly contradict their "satisfaction guaranteed" claim they post prominently; they certainly didn't guarantee my satisfaction even though I took their advice.

I've been using on my mac for 18 mos!

I've had my Wi-Fire about a year and a half and while it's true the old software was fairly buggy, the support staff was helpful and responsive. I could always connect I just had issues with having to restart when I unplugged the thing. For about a 10 months it was the only way I could get broadband Internet in my house and there's no way I could with the built in wifi. It does exactly what they say it will in my experience. The new update just makes it easier to use on a laptop going from home to work every day etc. and connect more reliably.
