Quanta to develop smartbook the size of an iPhone

Quanta promises iPhone-like smartbook in future

Quanta Computer, which supplies Apple and HP, will build a smartbook, according to a Tuesday report. The idea is for a "computer in an iPhone form factor," according to Quanta Chairman Barry Lam, who also added the company is seeking more strategic investments to keep making a profit. The smartbook will rely on a 3.5-inch touchscreen display and will have the ability to make voice calls as well as access the Internet.

Lam also cautioned BusinessWeek that ARM and Qualcomm are just two possible companies that may supply chips for the device, though no other information was divulged.

The company makes about 75 percent of its revenue from supplying notebooks and hopes its future growth will rely on cloud computing, where computer data and processing power will be delivered over the Internet. This is where a smaller, Internet enabled device will be profitable, Lam believes.

Timelines for the development of the device haven't been divulged.

    Lam, you're lame.

This is the lamest idea. It's like going back to the PDA. If I can't make a phone call from a can opener, it's not a can opener at all!

    Just what the world needs

So what you're saying, Barry, is that you are going to copy the iPhone 1:1, right? Why didn't you say so in the first place?

Then again, he had me at "The idea is for a computer in an iPhone form factor". What a novel idea!

So it's a slider phone, but in a clamshell configuration. Color me unimpressed.

    iphone form factor

Basically a iPod Touch, is that the device of the future? I don't know what there thinking but without a media- and appstore it's practically useless, its much more than just the hardware. Google is also betting on the cloud services but that isn't enough.

Apple created a big market with the iPod and iphone where other vendors also profited from the extra sales, i guess it could work if they are satisfied to have 1% of that market. Apple will soon (probably) own the PDA, Smarphone and Tablet market, other manufacturers can then fight for the leftovers. Let them kill each other, duh.
