Apple makes grab at 'iPad' trademark in numerous countries

updated 03:45 pm EST, Tue January 19, 2010

Name more likely for Apple tablet?

The name "iPad" may be a more likely choice for the Apple tablet, new information is thought to suggest. Just discovered in Canadian trademark databases is an application for the name by Slate Computing, well known as a front company for Apple. The application was originally submitted in July 2009, making it far more recent than ones for the name "iSlate," filed elsewhere around 2006 or 2007.

iPad trademarks are also noted to have been filed for in Europe and Hong Kong in the same month. The former application is associated with a UK lawfirm, while the latter is connected not to Slate but a business called IP Application Development, based in Delaware. IPAD has also been active as recently as last week, filing for iPad trademarks in Australia and New Zealand, one anonymous source claims.

A location the iPad trademark is not under Apple's control is in the US, where Fujitsu owns it for handheld computing. Such an obstacle would be unlikely to stop Apple however, as the company successfully won control of the iPhone name from Cisco. The Fujitsu iPAD is a point-of-sale device for retail.

    iPad All The Way!

Still the best legitimate name I've heard for the much-rumored device.

    What a stupid name

If its true imagine the miscommunication that would happen over the phone or even in person.
"Hello iPad tech support can I help you"
"Hello did you say iPad or iPod??"
"You came in the wrong line, you need our iPod tech support. This is iPad"

    iTablet, iSlate

iPad seems the best name for it, hygienic or not.
It does sound more like an inexpensive product to me, as far as a name can hint at something like that. The MacPad would then be the more expensive brother and iPaper the cheapest. :)

    Fujitsu won't give up iPad

It's a bit naive to compare gaining a brand from Cisco with getting Fujitsu to release 'iPad' in Japan. Japanese companies aren't known for letting go of brand rights even decades after products are obsolete. It's unlikely Fujitsu will sell Apple the name and far more likely that there will need to be a hefty license and royalty fee – as well as long an protracted negotiations before then. I hope I'm wrong of course, but this is most likely to delay the product in Japan for a long, long time.
