Aliph puts out Jawbone Icon with apps, iPhone features

updated 08:10 am EST, Mon January 18, 2010

Jawbone Icon has dynamic volume, micro USB

Aliph put a new emphasis on software today with the launch of its third-generation Bluetooth headset, the Jawbone Icon. The new design is slightly wider but overall smaller than the Prime. It also claims the title of the first headset with apps: a beta website will let owners install apps for voice dialing, directory searching and other tasks.

The headset is just as unique for its small but significant level of iPhone integration. Permission from Apple leaves the Icon the only non-Apple Bluetooth headset to have its battery life register on the iPhone's status bar. All phones get audible feedback for the battery level and caller ID.

Audio performance too is supposed to have received a major facelift with a significant reworking of the NoiseAssassin background noise reduction engine. No volume controls are built-in, but it now has dynamic adjustment to adapt to the local environment. Two devices can pair to the Jawbone at once.

Despite the iPhone favoritism, the Jawbone Icon will be available first at Verizon stores today. Six versions of the headset will be available in different color schemes and finishes, including black, gold and silver. All of them will cost $100.
