Apple Stores to institute 'Experts' by February?

updated 03:55 pm EST, Wed January 13, 2010

New workers serve as roaming Geniuses

A new job position at Apple Stores, the Expert, will make its public debut within about two weeks, sources claim. Apple is already said to be interviewing candidates, who if successful will supplement the role currently handled by Geniuses. Whereas a Genius remains stationary at a Genius Bar, Experts will be expected to roam store floors, taking questions from people without an appointment.

The look and operation of Apple Stores could change substantially by the end of 2010. Beyond Experts, the company is establishing a minimum size for future outlets, which must be at least three tables in width. A Palo Alto prototype store is also believed to be in development, which would further extend Apple's use of glass, and also incorporate live trees into the floor design. Store boundaries would "dissolve" in the minds of visitors, documents have suggested.

    between Januray and Marhc?

I remember the day when devoted Apple users would fill this role, spending time in the back corner of CompUSA to answer questions from newcomers and Mac users alike.

My good man, you speak of prehistory! The time before the return of the Jobs. Those were dark days indeed!

    the article is wrong

the Expert is NOT a Genius. Or even Genius Like. They don't do training or tech support. The Expert, as the job announcement indicates, is SALES. Most likely a walking encyclopedia of product knowledge, spec knowledge etc that can roam the floor, perhaps even peer supervising other sales staff, and answering questions like "so if I want to run Logic on this laptop will I have enough ram, should I get the faster processor or is the cheapest model good enough" and so on.

and it is a good thing cause at some stores the staff knowledge is variable. someone might know that X model has a 2.8 processor but not whether for a certain use that is vital or if its just an added but not needed expense. and no one else knows either.
