HP developing Android-based mini tablet?

HP's Win 7 tablet just one of many

HP's Windows 7 slate is just one of a much larger range of tablet devices that it may have in store, according to a tip on Friday. A major magazine publisher's senior editor claims to have seen multiple devices, one of which would run Android. It would be roughly twice as large as an iPhone but significantly smaller than the model shown at the Microsoft keynote.

Other projects at HP could include more Windows 7 designs as well as a Linux model, the New York Times says. Regardless of model, the company is believed to be encouraging the creation content friendly to the tablet, such as digital books and magazines, though the source expresses "worry" that HP doesn't understand media and will suffer as a result. Conde Nast in particular may be involved.

HP's Media Relations head Marlene Somsak unusually doesn't deny that HP is working on multiple slates but says the PC builder has no Android tablets to announce so far.

The rapid expansion suggests HP hopes to preempt an Apple tablet, which could not only be unveiled as early as January 27th but which may already have publisher content deals at or near completion.

    Just What We Need

It's bad enough with all the wannabe app stores out there. Now HP is going to subject us to the tablet store.

At least we won't have to put up with it for too long.
