Apple wins 16 web domains via ICANN complaint

updated 04:40 pm EST, Fri January 8, 2010

Accused fails to respond

Apple has won the rights to 16 domain names through a complaint to ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, reports say. Apple first submitted its complaint to ICANN in November, pursuing action through the organization's Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy. The domains were all owned by Daniel Bijan, a Los Angeles man and self-described "mega producer, singer, [and] entrepreneur."

Apple suggests that some of the domains owned by Bijan were "confusingly similar" to its trademarks, like the iPod, iPhone and MacBook. Others are described as having been used in "bad faith," forwarding people to competing products. Bijan could potentially have defended his ownership, but did not submit a response to ICANN and as such is considered to have forfeited.

Some of the domain names claimed by Apple include blueipod.com, ipodaccessories.info and macpro.us. Most notable may be macbookpro.com, more likely to be stumbled on by the public. As of Friday, the domain is unused.

    Sick of companies...

    ...realizing they should have registered a domain name and going after someone smart enough to have done so. Why didn't Apple, in their infinite wisdom and knowledge of upcoming products, think to register www.macbookpro.com when it first came out?

    @Mrjinglesusa

    Probably because people register speculative names of Apple products.

    Obviously...

    you've never had some lazy 'tard do this kind of thing to you. How well would you have done? Based on your "genius," I am guessing, you wouldn't do anything.

    @Mrj...

    Apple "should have" registered the domains? Why? Because they should expect that every unregistered variation on a trademarked phrase will be swiped by someone who has no stake in the name other than for potential extortion? It's sort of sad that you are tired of people not being as cynical as you are.

    Domain cyber-squatting parasite...

    got totally pwned by Apple. What the h*** does he need 16 domain names for. Did the dude actually make any accessories for those products? If not, what would he need to hold onto them for? He should be putting the domains all in his own name.

    same gig with celebrities

    a few years back it was a regular game to register the names of up and coming celebs and then try to sell the names to them for outrageous amounts. A handful of actors got pissed and filed complaints and won the names. Now any reasonably well known person can do the same and will often win against a squatter or someone doing something nasty like registering robertpattinson.com for a p*** site. all the fan babes are generally safe so long as they put something big and clear on the site that it's not official, just a fan.
