updated 03:30 pm EST, Wed January 6, 2010

New "wireless" online content, better decoding

In addition, Toshiba on Wednesday debuted three new players as well as support for Blu-ray 3D capability in its highest end model. All three of the new models -- BDX2500, BDX2700 and the BDX3000 -- feature online connectivity for access to online streaming entertainment from partners such as Netflix, Cinema Now and Pandora as well as 1080p VUDU content (like many other devices at CES). Following the recent finalization of the Blu-ray 3D format spec, Toshiba will also add the new BDX3000 Blu-ray player with 3D playback to complement its Toshiba 3D television products: the BDX3000, due later this year, adds 3D playback in addition to the full slate of features found on the BDX2700.

All three models feature 1080p/24fps playback of Blu-ray titles, as well as upconversion of standard definition DVD; they are BD-Live capable, offering online streaming capability, and support for playback of MP3, HD-JPEG, WMA and AVCHD files (for home movie viewing). In terms of audio, they also feature on-board decoding of Dolby True HD and DTS HD Master Audio | Essential via the analog 7.1 channel outputs or pass through via HDMI interface (for outboard decoding). The BDX2500 will be "wireless ready" via its USB port, with an optional Toshiba USB wireless "dongle*" for connection to a wireless home network. The mid-range BDX2700 also adds built-in wireless connectivity.

The BDX3000, which will ship in the third quarter of 2010, features a fresh new design, 3D capabilities and a wider range of yet undisclosed features. The BDX2500 will be $200, while the BDX2700 will cost $250; both expected to be available in the spring of this year.
