ThinkPads get speed upgrades, touchscreens

Lenovo finished its ThinkPad updates with four new systems that all use Intel's new mobile Core i5 and the four-core i7. The W510 mobile workstation is the flagship and switches to a new 15.6-inch LED-lit screen that covers a 95 percent color gamut. The same display now also has the option of multi-touch input and a color calibrator previously only available on the W700.

Other updates include two extra memory slots that let it support up to 16GB of RAM, a new keyboard and the option of the as yet unannounced Quadro FX 880M for graphics. It and the other ThinkPads in the update can use a Qualcomm Gobi chipset to provide 3G over either EVDO or HSPA. The W510 should be available to buy from January 7th and will start at $1,599.

Below it, the T410 and T510 form the new core of the mid-range ThinkPad lineup and now have respective LED-lit 14- and 15.4-inch displays, including a 16:9 ratio, 95 percent color-accurate 1080p option for the T510. Besides the Core i5 and i7 processors, they have the unique choice of DDR4 memory and can use the brand new Quadro NVS 3100M if Intel's graphics aren't fast enough. Their multi-touch is limited to the trackpad.

These too arrive on January 7th at base prices of $999 for either size.

A special variant of the smaller notebook, the T410s, is particularly thinner and designed for those who need portability over cost. Most options are the same as for the full T410, though the change in dimensions boosts its price to $1,399.
