LG details, prices first Mobile DTV for the US

LG mobile TV handles DVDs, audio too

LG today provided full details of its first Mobile DTV device for the US after this week's previous teaser. The DP570MH behaves superficially like a portable DVD player and can play these movies from its 7-inch, 480x234 screen but has a tuner for the new mobile digital TV standard to pick up live TV, even when traveling at speeds that would thwart regular digital TV signals. It can alternately load JPEG photos and WMA audio from a USB port.

Backing away slightly from earlier claims, LG now says the new TV can only play live broadcasts for about 2.5 hours when on battery power and extends that to 4.5 hours for DVDs. However, the tuner includes both a regular wall outlet power adapter and a car-friendly charger to keep it powered during a trip.

A release date is still less than clear for the portable TV, though LG expects to price it at $249 when it finally ships. Mobile DTV is free and should be available at "hundreds" of stations over the course of 2010.
