National Geographic digitizes 120 years of issues

National Geographic has released its entire magazine collection, or 120 years' worth, all on a 160GB hard drive. The Complete National Geographic on the hard drive includes the maps, stories and high-resolution photos found in the print magazine. All of this content only takes up 60GB of the space on the hard drive, leaving room for other documents or content.

The collection covers all National Geographic magazines printed between 1888 and 2008 and lets users find articles related to a specific region thanks to a Geobrowse feature. Even the advertisements from the original magazines are included, and users can test their knowledge using a trivia game that links to the respective articles for answers.

The Complete National Geographic is now available, priced at $200. [via DownloadSquad]

    way cool

    Bookmarked for next Xmas

It would be cool if you could update it via iTunes or NG's site. I'd pay an annual subscription for that.

    Pricing

It's actually $199, not $160, according to the NG site. It looks terrific, and I hope it's more long-lived in terms of functionality than their original wood boxed effort.

    Can it be backed up?

At that price, I would want to have it for ever, and no hard drive lasts for ever.

You can already do this with the DVD edition

No need to buy a dedicated hard disk, the box set with 6+Bonus DVD can be cached entirely (except the bonus) onto your hard disk.

    Instructions are here:

The DVDs take up 50 gigs; the data on the drive takes 60. Is there additional content with the HD version, or did were they able to add the bonus disk mateiral?
