Motorola to run Droid Super Bowl ad

Motorola is likely to run a Super Bowl commercial for the Droid, a leak indicates today. The phone maker is believed by sources of AdAge to have bought "at least one" ad during the American football game. Although the subject of the ad isn't directly confirmed, the Droid is currently the company's flagship phone and its most heavily promoted device, as it has received numerous ads from Verizon attacking the iPhone and pitching the Droid as more open and feature-laden than its rival.

Neither Motorola nor Verizon has commented on the ad, though it's implied that Verizon won't be involved in the promo spots.

The commercial makes Motorola the only electronics manufacturer marketing itself during the game as the only other technology firms confirmed to be running ads are online businesses like GoDaddy and HomeAway. Pepsi has also said it won't run any ads for its main brand and consequently rules out any of the online music store promos it has run in the past, such as with Apple and Amazon.

Historically, Motorola has promoted the RAZR, PEBL and other phone lines during the Super Bowl, but Apple to date has never run a Super Bowl spot for the iPhone; it has historically been reticent to use Super Bowl ads and, apart from its early "1984" and "Lemmings" ads, has only run one ad entirely of its own in 1999 and collaborated with Pepsi on an iTunes tie-in ad for the 2004 Super Bowl.

    This isn't just TV. This is the Super Bowl! That means they are only one of a hundred companies buying over-priced airtime during an overhyped and usually boring football game, only to have their commercial be ranked/rated/probed by all the nabobs of media telling us what commercials were worth watching, even though they wind up being forgotten within a week.

    And maybe Apple is 'reticent' to run Super Bowl ads because they realize they are over-priced and have no real value, as everyone will just be talking about the idiotic commercials, and half the viewing public is drunk anyway and aren't paying attention to the commercials or the game.

    Although are we supposed to take anyone seriously using such terms as 'FAIL' in an attempt to either be cool or l33t.
