Ford Sync gets 3G-to-Wi-Fi option

Ford system to allow DIY in-car 3G

Ford today upgraded its Sync in-car system with its first ever Internet access. Just referred to as Sync Wi-Fi, the feature lets a car using an updated version of the entertainment system share a 3G connection with passengers over a Wi-Fi bridge. Unlike the Autonet systems used by Chevrolet and Chrysler, however, the Ford approach has users supply their own modem and relies on the USB port to plug in a 3G stick from multiple carriers.

While the option is potentially more expensive than with rivals, Ford notes its system is already pre-installed from the factory and doesn't eat into passenger space. It's not clear if the system uses 802.11n, but it will support WPA2 encryption to protect the Wi-Fi link against nearby cars or other those on foot near a parked car.

Ford has yet to say when and which cars will start carrying the new Sync hardware, but more details may appear at CES next month. [via Leftlane News]

GM seems to do it better.

I like GM's WiFi router and UNLIMITED monthly plan at the much lower $30 price point much better.

With an extra battery and at-home plugin, I could see where this could replace your at-home and at-work ISP.

Not really. With GM, you're stuck with a specific carrier with their rules (which may or may not be 'unlimited' (Nowhere seemed to say that from what I saw). Plus it is a dealer installed option only.

All this requires is a USB wireless modem from whomever you wish to get it from (great for those with varying degrees of reception). Plus you can just use it when you wish. And you can take it with you when you leave the car, so you don't have to stay within car-shot if you're trying to replace your at-home/work ISP.

    Cool gears

Cool gadget on American cars. What about the foreign cars? I haven't heard a single word.

    Re: Windows Based

And they've worked closely with Ford to mate the hardware and software for a flawless experience. That reminds me of another company that prides themselves in that hardware/software mating...
