iPhone overtakes Windows Mobile's US share in October

updated 05:05 pm EST, Wed December 16, 2009

Active iPhone users outnumber Win Mobile

The number of active iPhone users in the US has passed that of Windows Mobile for the first time, new data from comScore shows. After just pulling even with Microsoft in July, Apple's smartphone platform jumped to an average of 8.97 million current users in October, well ahead of Microsoft's 7.13 million. The iPhone has regularly had higher market share now has also surpassed Windows Mobile devices in its actual user base.

Among smartphones, the iPhone is still second to RIM's BlackBerry, which has about 14.96 million users. Palm's introduction of the Pre has kept its active population growing to about 2.84 million, while Android and Symbian are growing but trail behind at 1.02 million and 1.3 million users each.

The reversal is attributed directly to the launch of the iPhone 3GS just before the start of the three-month span but reflects a rapidly accelerating usage curve for both Apple and RIM where most others are seeing much more modest growth. Windows Mobile in comparison has seen relatively stagnant share as its user base is similar to what it was in May.

    RIM

You better believe RIM is going to hang on to that corporate market as hard as possible. Thats what saving them and carrying over to consumer sales.

    And Steve Ballmer says:

Windows Mobile is on millions of phones.... I like our plan..... I like it a lot. !!!!

WinMo... losing share, day after day. :-)

PS, if the iPhone is a fad.... its the most popular, best liked fad in history... Its so popular, that all the other smart phones are trying to look just like the iPhone...

    Just a thought,

    Let's Not Forget:

Then there's the entire iPodTouch market running the same OS. These are even more numerous, though 24/7 data connectivity isn't the same, so how to add to the numbers?

Oh, my! Steve Ballmer is going

to have some explaining to do to investors and the media about what went wrong. Investors are going to hate that plan and hate it a lot. There are going to be a lot of tense moments when reporters start asking questions about the iPhone's growth at Microsoft events.

    Developers, developers, developers... all gone.

    A "Nelson" moment with Ballmer

    HA HA!

Seriously, MS could do themselves a HUGE favour and just exit the mobile phone OS market. They could plow those resources into, I don't know, making their customers happier with their day job OS.

    fading fad

Win Mobile would be a fading fad. Maybe we need to have Michael Dell tell Ballmer to just dump it and shut down.

    don't worry Steve Ballmer

    it's just a rounding error.

Besides, like you said prior to the iPhone's launch 2.5 years ago... it's not hardware that matters, it's the penetration of your mobile OS that matters.

    Oh, wait...

Looks like the only honest thing left to do, is liquidate and distribute the proceeds to shareholders.

Schadenfreude... it's not a German pastry.

Shouldn't the title of this article be "RIM dominates Apple in US market share"?
