Google, not HTC, files for Nexus One trademark

Google claims ownership of Nexus One name

Google was discovered today as having quietly filed for a trademark for its Nexus One phone. The application, submitted on December 10th, confirms that at least one variant of the Android device will be attached to the company's own name rather than badged by its creator HTC. HTC isn't known to have trademarked a device of its own.

The effort points to Google considering the smartphone its own rather than just a typical partner's and may lend support to rumors claiming Google has designed the phone itself and has only used HTC for manufacturing purposes. However, developer phones like the Dev Phone 1 and Ion have ultimately been just reference HTC phones rebranded but ultimately sold regularly through T-Mobile as the G1 and myTouch 3G respectively.

Some rumors have maintained that Google will still follow this practice and that the Nexus One may ship as the Passion or under another name, either for T-Mobile or other carriers. [via]
