Intel to preview mobile Core i5, more on Thursday

Intel showing 32nm chips early

Intel has signaled its plans to detail the first processors based on its 32 nanometer Westmere technology on Thursday. The semiconductor firm is expected to center its attention on the first dual-core notebook chips based on both the 32nm process and Nehalem and should introduce the mobile Core i5 and i3 as part of the introduction. These will be the first to carry graphics on the processor die and, on i5 models, will support Turbo Boost to automatically overclock one core when the other is shut down.

Unofficially, the line is expected to include 2.26GHz and 2.4GHz i5 models that can jump to 2.53GHz and 2.93GHz in Turbo Boost mode. The i3 should have 2.13GHz and 2.26GHz processors. No mention is made of a planned dual-core i7 design, though this may not arrive until the spring.

The introduction should also focus on desktop Core i5 and i3 designs that share the same split in features but run at higher clock speeds. Initial i5 models should run at 3.2GHz, 3.33GHz and 3.46GHz, while the i3 models are likely to clock at 2.93GHz and 3.06GHz.

Intel is also poised to show Pine Trail-based Atoms that could again show as early as this month.
