27-inch iMacs see two-week shipping delays [u]

LCDs, graphics delay large iMac shipments

(Updated with Apple apology) Apple has quietly pushed back the shipping time for all 27-inch iMacs to two weeks. Having already delayed them by five to seven days earlier, the delay is believed to stem from a quality measure addressing cracked screens on delivery as well as systems that exhibit periodic flickering or simply lose their video signal altogether. Neither Apple nor resellers have had an official explanation for the delay.

It is informally believed the issue is complex as some examples, such as our review unit, have yet to produce any of the symptoms representative of the problem.

The gap in shipping is a potential blow for Apple as it will delay many orders past Christmas and could not just disappoint buyers but also affect the company's quarterly results, which have been given a boost by new iMac revisions.

Update: Apple has reportedly apologized for the delays. "The new iMac has been a huge hit and we are working hard to fulfill orders as quickly as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience or delay in delivery this may cause our customers," the company says. No association with technical problems has been mentioned, nor has Apple said when shipping will return to normal.

    mine is awesome

I ordered my 27" i5 on Black Friday and received in this past Friday. I works awesome and is super fast. The display is absolutely beautiful! I no longer need 2 monitors and a behemoth Mac Pro sitting on the floor next to my desk taking up a ton of space.
I was tracking it's shipping progress and it left China on December 8 and arrived in Michigan on December 11.

    Not mine

I've had my i7 iMac on order since the third week of November and Apple now says it won't ship until the first week of January.

    I got mine

I ordered my i7 a week ago (BTO). It arrived Friday. It seems fine - no graphics glitches that I can see, no stuck pixels.

    Typical for new Apple product

This is just so typical of Apple products over the last several years. Don't get me wrong, the finished product is wonderful, but I have learned through my experience and many others' to never, ever buy a new product from Apple until at least 6 months have gone by. There will invariably be some serious issue that Apple will deny even exists until they figure out a fix, and then either a firmware update or a shipping delay while the hardware fix is applied to the manufacturing chain will occur. Happens every single time, without fail. Just read the Apple discussion boards on their own website. The 27-inch iMac is beautiful, no question. Sometime after, say, February or March would be a safe time to purchase one if you don't want to run the risk of a major problem with your unit, though.

Apple, don't you realize it is xmas time? You need to get those systems under the tree, because if they show up on Dec. 28th, Christmas will be ruined. Unless you're orthodox, and you celebrate christmas 2 weeks later. Or you're sane and don't waste your time worrying about gifts for only one day a year.

And, well, this is what happens when you have so many different products in your product line, with all those options for the user to add/remove. They should just cut down to just one iMac model, and they wouldn't have so many problems. And it would be so much easier for consumers, too.

    Oh, wait, that's Dell's problems....

    Order Status unaffected

My 27" i7 iMac order is scheduled to ship the 18th. I just checked the apple website and that has not changed.

I really don't think Apple has a handle on the cause of the flickering problem yet... While not all iMacs are affected enough seem to be to make me wonder if I should cancel my order before it ships.

    Status Changed

The status of my 17 order JUST changed to "prepared for Shipment. As I said it was originally scheduled to ship on the 18th... It looks like it will be going out today or tomorrow...

So the production line has NOT been halted.

    Things to come...

This is really hinting at things to come... I mean, the factories (per my sources which have been reliable since 2002) are going full blast... Is apple set to have a record mac quarter? Has the tide finally turned to the point where apple has to expand contractors to meet rising demand? I hope so, and i think so.
