T-Mobile mulling dropping @Home phone service?

updated 05:45 pm EST, Fri December 11, 2009

T-Mobile sees @Home router as unprofitable

T-Mobile is considering the possibility of dropping part of its special HotSpot@Home calling service, a source said today. The carrier is supposedly disappointed with its fixed service, which uses two SIM cards to create a local network for phones, and may drop the feature "soon." T-Mobile's reversal is said by the BGR contact to be the result of T-Mobile's new chief operational officer determining that the plan isn't profitable.

The tip doesn't make any mention of discontinuing HotSpot Calling, which lets certain T-Mobile phones make calls over Wi-Fi that can bridge on to the GSM phone network when the caller leaves Wi-Fi coverage. It's unlikely T-Mobile will abandon this service in the near-term as it just last month added a version of the BlackBerry Bold 9700 with support for the theoretically less expensive Internet-supported service.

T-Mobile hasn't commented on the rumor.
