T-Mobile takes Android Market carrier billing live

updated 05:45 pm EST, Thu December 10, 2009

T-Mobile G1, myTouch go straight to phone bills

T-Mobile's US branch told its Android phone users late Wednesday that it has started updating Android Market to support carrier billing. The change lets users skip the usual Google Checkout process and instead pay for any purchased apps through their regular phone bill. It will also have a more elegant means of handling refunds as any apps deleted within 24 hours won't count against the bill.

The change will be pushed to the Cliq, myTouch 3G and other devices over the next three weeks and should be reflected in every T-Mobile Android phone by December 30th. T-Mobile expects the update to be silent and that users won't notice until they visit Android Market after the update is already active.

An update for these devices, all of which are running no later than Android 1.6, confirms that carrier billing won't require Android 2.0.1 and is instead dependent on individual cell providers.
