Nokia ships 5800 Navigation Edition to US

updated 04:35 pm EST, Tue December 8, 2009

Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition now in the US

Nokia has began shipping its 5800 Navigation Edition handset in the US, after introducing it earlier this summer. The touchscreen device includes lifetime voice-guided navigation information for all of North America and ships with a car mount kit. Ovi Maps provides the guidance and also offers navigation help for pedestrians.

When driving, users get speed limit warnings, speed camera alerts, and updated traffic information. Pedestrians are shown shortcuts such as one-way streets, parks and pathways. The map info for the US and Canada is preloaded onto the phone, which saves users from needing a constant data connection to look up addresses or calculate routes. Map data of 180 other countries can be downloaded for the handset for free using the Nokia Map Loader PC app.

Users interface using the 3.2-inch display. Data can be accessed using the HSDPA connection, and photos can be taken using a 3.2-megapixel camera that sports Carl Zeiss optics. Memory can be expanded up to 16GB thanks to a memory card slot.

The Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition is now available and costs $299 online. Those who buy the phone by December 31st and activate an Ovi Store account will receive a $50 prepaid gift card from VISA.
