updated 09:20 am EST, Tue December 8, 2009

New Sugar Labs OS brings

Sugar Labs on Tuesday released the downloadable Sugar on a Stick v2 Blueberry OS meant for children's education. The program was originally developed for the One Laptop per Child XO-1 netbook, but this version can be loaded onto any Windows or Mac PC, and is also available for computers running on Linux.

Improvements in the new version include simpler navigation, better wireless networking, quicker updates of Activities and improved Gnash and Flash support. There are new activities, including Physics and OOo4Kids, along with the existing Browse and Read applications. Read allows e-books in PDF, EPUB and DejaVu formats to be read. A Read Etexts Activity will read out e-books aloud.

Users can download the Sugar on a Stick software onto any USB flash drive with at least 1GB of free space, and will boot directly on the host PC, where it runs under virtualization. Sugar has also partnered up with Nexcopy to help it distribute the OS on USB drives, with Nexcopy donating a 20-stick USB duplicator. Also, the two companies launched a website that will help people donate used USB drives to turn into host devices for the distribution of the software.

Sugar on a Stick v2 Blueberry is now available for a free download.
