Barnes & Noble ships first Nooks, confirms delays

Nook delivered next week, no retail pre-Xmas

Barnes & Noble today confirmed that it's shipping the first Nook readers to early customers. The dual-screen readers should reach the first shoppers sometime next week and will be accompanied by in-store demo units at its larger stores on Monday. Spokeswoman Mary Ellen Keating wouldn't say how many units had been ordered before first shipments but did say there was a "high volume."

The representative also confirmed talk that the company will miss Christmas at retail and won't have any purchasable Nooks until after the holiday. Keating portrayed it as a strategic move to guarantee that more of the pre-order customers will get their own units on time.

It's been previously rumored that Barnes & Noble only had a small level of stock for the holidays and was increasingly likely to run out of stock with any significant popularity, much as Amazon encountered with early Kindle production runs. Its touchscreen interface, Wi-Fi and book lending are believed to nonetheless give it an edge in popularity.

Not a good idea to go head to head with any major marketshare holder (Kindle in this case) this time of year with limited supply.

    Re: Fail

And if they waited, you'd say it would fail because they ignored the holiday season.

Actually my point was that they should have been more than ready.
