My Living Desktop 4.5 offers over 40 built-in videos

updated 03:25 pm EST, Thu December 3, 2009

Also imports user videos

Amuse has released an update to its video desktop and screensaver utility, My Living Desktop 4.5. The app replaces standard desktop content with moving images. The latest version provides over 40 built-in videos for users to choose from, with nature-themed sound effects, and an option to import personal movies.

A Serenity Break function can tell users to take a break at preselected times throughout the day. Each one begins with a chime sound, after which all active work fades away to be replaced by a video scene. Conversely the app can be set to automatically mute itself, for instance when music or games are running. If need be, the software can be set to stop when a notebook's battery is running low.

My Living Desktop 4.5 requires Mac OS X 10.5 or higher, and is available in a single-user license priced at $35, or a five-user license costing $50. Users running previous versions of the program can upgrade for $15; moving from a single- to a multi-user license costs $20.

Like Dreamscene but for OS X

I tried it out and decided to buy it. I comes with 45 scenes that you can download in the background and the scenes seem to take around 10% o CPU if I set it to the lower CPU setting. Not bad.
