Softbank launches special iPhone 3GS promotion

updated 11:35 am EST, Tue December 1, 2009

Phones free or cheaper on contract

Japanese carrier Softbank has launched a new promotion for the iPhone 3GS, according to an announcement. People willing to sign a two-year contract can now receive a 16GB 3GS for free, as part of the company's "iPhone for Everybody" campaign. The 32GB 3GS should be newly available at a cost of 480 yen ($6) per month, down from 960 yen.

The discounts may be in response to dwindling stock of the 8GB iPhone 3G. While still sold by Apple, the model is in general less popular than the 3GS, and is being marginalized by many carriers. One second-hand report suggests that Softbank has effectively stopped carrying the 3G, which would likely make it the first carrier in the world to phase out the device.
