Future RED cameras delayed by chip problems

RED Scarlet and EPIC set back by 30 days

RED this week warned that its EPIC-X camera program would be delayed by 30 days due to a problem with its app-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) chips. Company head Jim Jannard explained that it has to perform a new "metal spin," or manufacturing revision, due to an unspecified flaw. It's considered a relatively mild obstacle as a major alteration would have taken substantially longer.

The delay may be enough to push the early-access cameras into early 2010 but also confirms that the company is late into development of the cameras. The EPIC-X sensor should be one of the first comparatively affordable 5K resolution cameras as well as one of the first truly modular designs but, along with the Scarlet, has taken a long time to reach production due to the absence of established technology.

"What we are doing is something that no [one] else is doing," Jannard said.

    editor, please!

so actually, it IS considered a relatively mild obstacle.

Anybody who wants to buy the 1st generation of this camera, please raise your hand.

    Yeah, I thought so.

    Raises hand

I'd buy the epic in a second if I had the money... as it is, I have the money saved up for the scarlet.

Did you know participating in the early Beta program gives you the CEO's Cell phone number. It wold be nice to to tell my 'druthers to somebody capable of making those changes.

These cameras promise technology beyond what is available at any price point.. and I would be willing to to put up with some headache to shoot over double of HD resolution.

    Alternative Caption

Might I suggest an alternative heading for this article? It should probably read as follows: "Future Red Cameras Delayed by Laws of Physics". There is more chance of John Connor appearing from the future inside the LHC than there is of some of Jannard's promises ever being seen in this reality!
