Droid helps Motorola overtake Apple in brand loyalty

Motorola image helped by anti-Apple ads

The launch of the Motorola Droid and Verizon's ad campaign have pushed Motorola's brand loyalty for the first time in recent memory, YouGov reported in its BrandIndex late last week. The Android phone maker passed Apple one week ago and, as of Friday the 20th, had a loyalty score among men of 29.3. By comparison, Apple has fallen from a recent high of 48.1 on the 9th, shortly after the Droid launch, to 22 on the 20th.

As Motorola's perception has remained mostly flat, the shift suggests more that Apple's brand has been hurt less by the Droid's popularity and more by the Verizon campaign, which has pointed out the poorer reach of AT&T's 3G network as well as the iPhone's limitations. Both the Droid and its campaign have targeted technically savvy men and highlighted its ability to multitask, its higher-resolution camera, and the relatively open software platform.

AT&T has taken lately to offering its own response ad and this week enlisted the help of Apple itself for pro-iPhone, anti-Verizon ads that highlight the inability of Verizon's CDMA network to handle both calling and data at the same time. [via AppleInsider]

    oh come on

    the notion that Motorola truly has more brand loyalty than Apple is completely ridiculous and says a lot more about the (lack of) validity of this survey than it does about Apple.

    Or maybe the Droid has an app that helps you pick up chicks which would otherwise be totally out of your league? That's the only way I could think of Motorola truly commanding higher brand loyalty than Apple.

    I completely concur, oco! This is the biggest piece of public-opinion-c*** I have ever read. One commercial series changes the brand loyalty of a major consumer segment? Preposterous. Ludicrous. Just more spin from the spinmeisters.

    Motorola is a failing company

    that could never gain as much brand loyalty as Apple. Motorola products are junk. The past five years would indicate that much. I'm sure the name Motorola brings the vision of an albatross when it comes to devices. Motorola is one of the most poorly managed companies and I'm sure the Droid will be one of it's last mobile devices before the company files for bankruptcy. Comparing Apple to Motorola is absurd and giving the edge to Motorola is insane. Two U.S. companies going in opposite directions.

    LOL

    Until the Droid users find out that their "open" system can only install about 200MB of apps.

    Or that the Droid phones are originally windows mobile phones that has so little free RAM, useful multi-tasking is only theoretical even with the android os installed on the poor hardware.

    Now that the geeks all have their Droids, I suspect the tables will turn back again once the novelty wears off. I've seen the Droid and it's a good thing the OS is pretty because the device is boxy and bulky.

    There's also the issue of some developers already jumping ship from the Android platform due to the lack of a coherent app sales approach. The stat I heard was that "longtime" Android developers who also sell iPhone apps were selling them on Apple's app store at a ratio of 400:1 to the Android versions.
