Nokia 6700 slide and 7230 hit mid-range

Nokia started off its Tuesday with two slider phones to spark life in its mid-range. The 6700 slide takes some styling cues from the iPod nano and comes in six solid aluminum colors. It's additionally a relatively high-end camera phone for the category and has a 5-megapixel sensor with Carl Zeiss optics and dual flashes.

GPS and Wi-Fi aren't onboard, but it supports up to 10.2Mbps 3G over HSPA and takes microSDHC cards up to at least 16GB. In at least its initial form, the phone doesn't support North American HSPA bands but will work for both GSM calls and EDGE data in the area. It should be relatively inexpensive at 160 euros ($239) before carrier discounts when it ships in early 2010.

The 7230 is aimed more at the frugal buyer and has a 3.2-megapixel camera as well as slower 2Mbps 3G. It still has a microSDHC slot, and its 3G is available both in an Americas-friendly version with 850MHz as one frequency as well as an international model. Nokia's cost-cutting puts the 7230 at just 100 euros ($149) before discounts and will have it ship at the same time as the 6700 slide.
