Firmware update to give PS3 3D capabilitiy: Sony

Sony recently announced to its investors that it will add 3D stereoscopic capability to the games on its PS3 gaming console via a future firmware update. The presentation (pdf) contains the line "all PS3 units will be firmware-upgradeable to 3D," and that the company plans to lead the 3D market, though no timelines were revealed. There was, however, an indication that Sony will offer 3D-specific tools to developers of its games.

3D gaming is considered just part of a larger strategy from the company, as it also plans to bring out 3D movies on its Blu-ray format and make HDTVs more suitable to the display of such images. As a consequence, the firmware upgrade will force many to upgrade their other hardware to take full advantage of all 3D games and movies have to offer.

Sony also has plans to install 3,000 of its 3D theater projectors into cinemas before the end of 2010.

Sony executives believe the PlayStation business can reach profitability by March of 2011, thanks in part to the planned 3D tech for its PS3 along with a Motion Controller that aims to cash in on the success pioneered by Nintendo's Wii console. [via Gamasutra]
