Garmin lets users upload paper maps

Garmin on Wednesday introduced a new Custom Maps capability that lets users take existing paper or digital maps and upload them to their portable Garmin navigators. The free service is compatible with Dakota, Oregon and Colorado outdoor GPS handhelds. Those using Macs and PCs can use the service.

Users have to make the Custom Maps by saving the map they want to add in JPG format, either my scanning a paper map or converting a digital file. They then need to georeference this map image using Google Earth to line up key landmarks with those on the map. This new map then needs to be uploaded to the device and can be viewed and zoomed into and out of freely.

The option will be available starting today.
