OCZ delivers Colossus 3.5-inch SSDs

updated 11:05 am EST, Tue November 17, 2009

OCZ Colossus arrives with smaller options

OCZ today formally launched the Colossus, its first solid-state drive line aimed primarily at the desktop. The 3.5-inch SATA II disks are designed both to fit directly into desktops without a mounting kit but also to provide performance above even some notebook SSDs. OCZ has raised its speed claims beyond early estimates and now says that the fastest Colossus drives reach peak read and write speeds of 260MB per second and sustained write speeds of 220MB per second.

The formal introduction also sees OCZ expand its line to include significantly lower capacities beyond the 500GB and 1TB versions promised ahead of time. It now also includes 120GB and 250GB disks. These include special Colossus Cascade models, though it's not clear what if any feature have changed in these models.

Only Amazon is known to be stocking the Colossus models so far but officialy lists new orders as taking a month or more to ship. Prices range from $609 for a 120GB disk to $3,572 for a 1TB Colossus Cascade.

I would sooooo LOVE to have a tray of the 1TB drives in our NAS. Absolutely game changing for the NAS/SAN market. Who needs loads of cache and PAM cards when you've got R/W performance like that to each drive?
