Universal intros dedicated Blu-ray app for iPhones, iPods

updated 10:50 am EST, Wed November 11, 2009

Currently supports handful of movies

Film studio Universal has released a free iPhone application, pocket BLU. The software communicates via Wi-Fi with network-connected Blu-ray players, allowing more advanced control over menus and playback. Users can for instance take advantage of a virtual keyboard, and tilt an Apple handheld into widescreen mode to access a graphical timeline.

Also notable is the ability to stream bonus content over the Internet, and save some of it locally on an iPhone or iPod for later viewing. The app has several limitations, however: players for instance must not only have Wi-Fi, but be running a disc specifically compatible with pocket BLU. Some early supported titles include Bruno, 9, Inglourious Basterds and Public Enemies. iPhones and iPods must be running iPhone 2.2.1 firmware or better.

I knew there had to be a catch. Sony needs to come out with an iPhone app to control the PS3 on ALL movies, DVD and BluRay.
