Verizon to get Saygus VPhone Open Development handset

updated 08:40 pm EST, Tue November 10, 2009

Device also works as a Wi-Fi router

Saygus is reportedly readying its V1 Android handset for Verizon's network, according to PhoneScoop. The sideways slider will carry the name VPhone and serve as Verizon's foray into the Open Development Initiative. Highlighted features include the ability to work as a Wi-Fi router for wireless broadband, while a front-facing VGA camera is capable of sharing live two-way video feeds with other users.

The VPhone will integrate a number of high-end smartphone features, including an 800x480 capacitive touchscreen, 5 megapixel primary camera with flash, and a 624MHz processor. The device also offers Wi-Fi, EVDO Rev. A and Bluetooth connectivity, along with GPS and an electronic compass.

The ODI designation is claimed to separate the VPhone from restrictions common with other Verizon devices. The device will allow apps such as VoIP services that utilize 3G connections in addition to Wi-Fi.

The VPhone was recently approved by the FCC and is allegedly nearing certification on Verizon's network. Customers can expect availability late this year or early in 2010.
