Early Windows 7 sales smash all-time records

Win 7 10-day sales best ever for MS

Sales of Windows 7 have broken Microsoft's sales records for an initial operating system launch, company CEO Steve Ballmer said at a Japanese press event today. The executive said early sales have been "fantastic" and that the new OS has generated more revenue in its first 10 days than any earlier version of Windows during a similar timeframe. He declined to provide specific revenue or unit numbers.

Microsoft is counting on Windows 7 to reverse three disappointing quarters where revenue has declined year-over-year through sluggish sales in Windows. Results only noticeably improved in summer as Microsoft sold more copies of Windows during the period than in any other quarter despite Windows 7 only shipping in late October.

While the tally is promising, short-term sales aren't known to be wholly representative of success. Microsoft was eager to celebrate doubled Windows Vista sales compared to XP but grew silent over time as Vista developed its negative reputation and sales cooled off within months. Ballmer has also warned that Windows 7 may only provide a small boost as most buyers haven't planned to wait until Windows 7 to buy either a new PC or an OS upgrade.

    so lame

Vista barely counts because it was such a POS. Win 7 is a decent product selling into a market that is probably 2x bigger than XP. It better sell more than previous OSes.

    but, jarod

If everyone dumped Windows and bought macs, you would lose your sense of superiority.

All the critical reviews say its a great OS. Even Mossberg who we all know goes down on Steve Jobs each and every friday says its great. So why are all the comments on this forum so negative? Is it because its garbage? Or is it because you fanboys are so insecure about your purchase that you need pound the blog world with your useless comments? I wonder....

    Ballmer is lying

Windows 7 may indeed be as fine a product as they say (it couldn't be any worse, after all), but in the middle of one of the worst recessions in US history, I flat don't believe Ballmer's claim, specifically when he can't or won't provide specifics. It's not like he hasn't lied about this stuff before.

And hats off Trolltudo for finally coming up with a pithy, funny line. Geez, it's about time, but good job.

    Monkey Boy strikes again

Windows 7 is pretty decent - and that coming from a hardcore Mac guy. But I'm not running out to buy a PC because of it.

Do they HAVE to use a picture of this moron every time they post Microsoft news?

According to a recent report from an IT security firm, 80% of the viruses/trojans/worms/malware that infected Vista back to Windows II still--STILL--infects Windows 7! For the love of Pete!

Isn't that enough for any computer user, much less us "fanboys," to abhor anything Microsoft? How much extra money must users pay per year/month/decade for ADDITIONAL virus protection before they can feel secure within that environment? Is this too much to ask from Mr. Ballmer, et al? And where's the [free/built-in] iLife suite for Win7? Must I BUY "Office" to be even remotely as productive on a PC?

Remember, this is the same CEO (Steve B.) that said the iPhone would NEVER achieve any kind of market penetration as long as WinMob exists. How's that prediction working out? Zune? Pink? Big-a** Table? This man is a clown, an idiot; his company is a lumbering, impotent, megabeast, and his stock is DEAD, DEAD, DEAD.

Good luck, Hmm. You and MS deserve each other. (Oh, and before you bring up the market share issue, if that is truly your rationale for evaluating a computer OS, McDonalds makes the finest hamburger in the world. FYI: It doesn't.)

    Another Rounding Error

The WinDrones haven't had a real OS upgrade in over 8 years, so one would HOPE it would sell well. But then we all know they'll pretty much settle for any POS-OS from Redmond.

Regardless of sales numbers or whatever spin Microsoft and their paid Band of Shills put on it, it's STIIL been over 8 years since XP and Microsoft STILL hasn't released an OS with a moden underlying architecture. Win7 is little more than Vista with a load of bug fixes, a new skin and a handful of features stolen from Mac OS X.

Do we, or should we care about this?

Better than Vista! Better than Vista!

We just replaced an old XP machine with a brand new one running Windows7. I never used Vista so I guess I'm missing out on that "Better than Vista" euphoria. What I can tell you is that it is noticeably much slower in startup and ordinary usage than my 3.5 year old iMac. According to Moore's law, any new hardware should be at least 4x as fast as my old machine so I have no choice to believe that it's the OS dragging it down.

Well, at least they did a reasonably good job stealing functionality from the OSX dock. They get points for that.
