Voyager Pro UC bundles Bluetooth adapter

Plantronics today launched a rare Bluetooth headset aimed primarily at the desktop. The Voyager Pro UC bundles a USB Bluetooth adapter with the familiar Voyager Pro and lets any Mac or Windows PC handle calls over the wireless earpiece if they don't already have built-in Bluetooth. Its functions can work natively with many VoIP apps, including Skype and business-class apps from Cisco.

As a multi-point audio device, the Pro UC has a toggle to switch back to a phone or another device without having to re-pair. The audio characteristics of the headset remain the same and center on a high-quality microphone boom with active noise cancellation. As its ear hook is a large, integral part of the design rather than an add-on, the device also has higher than usual inbound audio quality and still lasts for six hours of continuous talk.

The new Voyager should ship next month for $200 with software to help organize and manage calls on Windows PCs.

Aimed primarily at...desktop PeeCees, as there hasn't been a non-server Mac computer (desktop OR portable) that shipped without built-in bluetooth since January 2008.

    Needs testing

I had the previous version of the headset. It was advertised as Mac compatible, including on the packaging, but it wasn't fully compatible. You could switch to a computer based call, if you were close enough to the computer to hear it ring, but once you did, you had to physically go to the computer to hang up the call and switch the headset back to any other paired device. A lot of the device functionality with that version was dependent on the included dongle, which made using it with laptops a challenge because of the dongle sticking out of the side where it could easily be damaged. I recommend a thorough review of the device's Mac functionality before recommending it.
