Exec responsible for Apple ads steps down

updated 03:40 pm EDT, Fri October 30, 2009

Could influence look, tone of future ads

Lee Clow is resigning from his position as the chief creative officer for ad firm TBWA/Media Arts Lab, reports say. A veteran of the advertising industry for more than 40 years, Clow is best known for orchestrating Apple's most famous marketing campaigns, such as the 1984 Superbowl ad. The executive is also responsible for the dancing silhouettes in iPod ads, and the Get a Mac campaign attacking Windows PCs.

Although Clow will remain as the chief creative for the TBWA network, and the chairman and global director of Media Arts, his former position is being taken over by Duncan Milner, the current executive creative director for the Apple account. Milner's past experience includes work with clients like Nissan, Levi's and Pedigree. A change in leadership could potentially affect the direction of future Apple ads; the success of current efforts is likely to keep them consistent however, in part because of the heavier-than-normal influence of Apple CEO Steve Jobs.

Media Arts Lab was founded as a subset of TBWA in 2006, with the specific purpose of handling Apple. Clow claimed that the agency would also produce "culture" instead of simple advertising. Non-Apple campaigns spun by the executive include the Energizer bunny and the Taco Bell chihuahua.

Only the head gets credit

I doubt whether this guy was the creative mind behind ads other than the 1984 ad. Given the dynamics of most agencies, he got credit for his team and their work. In other words, I doubt we'll see much change after he steps down.
