Apple showing tablet specs in Australia?

updated 08:05 am EDT, Tue October 27, 2009

Apple pushing media deals for tablet

Apple has been actively recruiting media producers in Australia for its rumored upcoming tablet, a claim today maintains. The American company has supposedly been giving publishers of various forms some specifications to gauge their interest in developing content formatted and sold for the device. Little is actually mentioned about the tablet itself by the Sydney Morning Herald sources, though it's described again as larger than an iPhone but meant for the web, e-books and movies.

The rumor supports notions that Apple is talking to print media publishers to bring text content to iTunes in preparation for the tablet, which may have a screen as large as 10.6 inches and suit itself more to books and magazines as a result.

Foxconn is believed to be assembling the tablet for Apple and shipping it in early 2010, but the newspaper doesn't claim to have access to a release date and only speculates that the mystery device would likely ship before Apple's by now annual iPhone updates in mid-year.

    Not unless...

If exclusivity and a 12-18 month contract with a phone company are mandatory, I don't see this getting the same traction as the iPhone er, because it isn't one. I hope theres an "iPod Touch" version without 3G.

I don't see why one couldn't simply buy a tablet and use it over wi-fi only. I'm not sure where you get the idea that a contract with a cellular provider would be required.

I used to think the same thing before I got my iPod Touch. Granted, there's lots of places where I can get free wifi access, and even large swatches of area on the campus where I work where I can sign in to authorized access, but I can't get access everywhere, all the time. Always-on, cell-provided access would be great... if only it didn't cost so much.
