Acer releases desktop LCD with 8m:1 contrast

updated 07:50 am EDT, Fri October 23, 2009

Acer S243HL uses white LED backlight

Acer wrapped up the week today by rolling out a new high-performance desktop LCD that appears first in Japan. The 24-inch S243HL uses a white LED backlight that provides it with an extremely high contrast ratio even when compared to typical LED-lit displays, jumping from 1,000:1 to 8,000,000:1 with dynamic contrast active. The thinner technology also contributes to a main panel that measures about 0.57 inches thick, although the base is thicker.

Its primary sacrifice is the use of a basic TN panel that trades some absolute color accuracy and viewing angles for both cost and a speed-up in pixel response time to 2ms. The display outputs at a native 1080p and comes with dual HDMI inputs as well as a single VGA jack; an HDMI-to-DVI adapter is included in the box, and a 2W speaker system is built in to supply audio.

The S243HL should be available for the equivalent of $360 in Japan. Acer hasn't detailed international plans but normally brings its LCDs to other markets. [via Impress]

    Looks nice

It's nice that the guts are in the base, not the back of the screen.
Too bad it's not color accurate.

Note that it has a matte screen.

    If OLED's are 1m:1

    Than how is this 8m:1?

I'm not a fan of the styling either.

    That's how it is.

This isn't an OLED, it's plain LCD. And as to the No. of color vs. contrast degrees, I beliece backlight levels & dark/light liquid crystal operate independently from those used to produce color. The former utilizes one parameter set, the latter uses 3.
