Clearwire and Sprint set to launch 4G in TX, NC, HI cities

updated 07:40 pm EDT, Thu October 22, 2009

Companies claim up to 10X faster speed than 3G

Clearwire and Sprint have announced their latest 4G deployment plans that will bring the faster data service to cities in the continental US and the Hawaiian islands. Fulfilling earlier promises, locations scheduled for November launch include Charlotte, Greensboro, and Raleigh, North Carolina; Austin, Dallas/Fort Worth and San Antonio, Texas. Honolulu and Maui residents will be able to utilize the upgraded network beginning in December.

The technology is said to be considerably faster than the current 3G network, with peak speeds reaching up to 12Mb/s. Subscribers can expect typical performance to fall closer to 2-4Mb/s.

Other locations that will get Sprint 4G this year include cities in Maryland, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Georgia and Nevada. Altogether, the 25 new markets include approximately 30 million residents.

The new service is available through the carrier's mobile broadband packages, with the 4G option adding $10 per month.
