Windows 7 UK pre-orders set record at Amazon

updated 12:05 pm EDT, Wed October 21, 2009

Win 7 Amazon sales beat Harry Potter

Advance sales of Windows 7 at Amazon UK set an all-time record, the online retailer said this morning. Pre-orders for the Microsoft OS, which began in July, have been higher than for even the final Harry Potter book and in sheer numbers has only been outweighed by the release of Dan Brown's Lost Symbol. Windows 7 has also significantly outsold Windows Vista and took only eight hours to exceed what its predecessor sold during its entire pre-order run.

Word of the sales tally comes just a day before Windows 7 officially goes on sale worldwide and is particularly needed for Microsoft, which even in 2009 faced many users opting to either keep Windows XP or buy it with a new system rather than use Vista. Dell's enterprise president Stephen Schuckenbrock told those at a media event today that Vista "is a bust," particularly for companies that depend on compatibility and performance.

    I don't know...

Is this more of a vindication for Windows 7 or an indictment of Windows Vista?

    Yes

This is a sign of desperation.

    Looking for a Fix

Unfortunately, these poor people are buying it looking for a fix without checking to be certain all the applications they are currently running are even compatible with it, of it those Apps might need a patch. Make sure you have drivers all the drivers available too...

    Its a solid OS

Windows 7 really shows just how 'unfinished' vista was when they pushed it out.

I've only had one application that has issues on Windows 7, that is ThinApp. VMWare has acknowledged the issue and is going to release a patch or update. Other than that I have had no issues with hardware or software.

If you have hardware that was vista compatible, or has at the least Vista drivers then you are good to go with Windows 7.

Wow. Just like people who pre-order Snow Leopard without knowing what apps is does/doesn't support, and whether you need updated drivers for your peripherals. Or to find out they changed the font rendering subsystem and everything displays 'slightly differently' now.

But that's why people pre-order. Because they want to be the first, to try out and see what does/doesn't work. The rest of us sit back and wait for the dust to settle.

    No Problems Here

The nice thing about Windows 7 was that so many people like me were able to download and use the beta or RC versions way ahead of time for free. That was a smart move by Microsoft; it's enabled me to assure people that Windows is indeed improved.

I agree. I have the RC on my laptop now and it runs beautifully. I've recently had an issue with ACPI (not turning of the pc when it goes into sleep) but that's something that used to work. I know it's just something I messed up somewhere and I've been too lazy to fix. I've assured all of my friends and family that 7 is considerably faster and more stable... and I got the $30 pro upgrade.
