ARM shows Mali graphics chip with 720p 3D

updated 11:15 am EDT, Wed October 21, 2009

ARM Mali 200 tech demo

ARM at the TechCon3 expo starting today will begin showing working examples of its Mali graphics core. The design is now known to be much faster than most existing mobile graphics and, even with the basic single-core Mali-200, can render modern-looking 3D in 720p at 30 frames per second. In many cases it can use 4X antialiasing to clean up the image without a performance hit.

Among the demos are a multi-touch map tool as well as bowling and a concept 3D interface for navigating contacts. It's also known the Mali-200 can decode 720p video and play many forms of Flash video.

No customers have been named for the Mali chips, which could reach smartphones and other handhelds before the end of the year. The multi-core Mali-400 is also enroute and can render at 1080p with more detail.
