Memorex enters HD pocket camcorders

updated 05:15 pm EDT, Thu October 15, 2009

Memorex intros MyVideo, MyVideo HD cams

Not normally known for capturing video itself, Memorex today upgraded its pocketable video cameras with two sleeker models. The 720p-capable MyVideo HD and standard definition MyVideo VGA emulate the same basic concept as Flip cameras but have the advantages of 2X digital zoom and longer battery life. The MyVideo HD's more demanding video gives it a still long 2.5 hours of recording time, while the VGA model can capture for up to five hours.

The MyVideo HD specifically is unique in carrying a full-size HDMI output that lets it use standard cables instead of a proprietary adapter; it can also shoot still photos at five megapixels where the VGA is limited to its namesake resolution. Storage is also different and is limited to 2GB on the VGA edition where the higher resolution of the HD comes along with 4GB of storage. Either produces video in an unspecified format (likely MPEG-4) that can upload to YouTube or elsewhere with little to no conversion.

Both cameras are shipping to OfficeMax and Toys R Us today and carry prices of $100 for the basic MyVideo and $130 for the full HD edition.
