BlackBerry Storm 2 surfaces in authorized reviews

updated 11:20 pm EDT, Wed October 14, 2009

Hardware and software could be ready for public

RIM's BlackBerry Storm 2 has surfaced in several authorized reviews, potentially indicating the device is almost ready to be launched. Although several unauthorized videos have been circulated, the latest materials likely feature hardware and software that has been finalized for close scrutiny.

A video review published by T3 claims the device has a "lightning fast" processor. The company's SurePress technology eliminates the actual movement of the screen and replaces it with piezoelectric feedback when a virtual button is pressed.

Wall Street Journal's Walt Mossberg claims the browser is "still inferior to Apple's, Google's and Palm's." Typing is said to be improved, with the addition of a virtual keyboard in vertical mode. The other notable new feature is Wi-Fi, bringing the device on par with the connectivity options offered by most other smartphones.

Pricing and a launch date still remain unconfirmed. Mossberg suggests the device is expected sometime in November for $200, while other reports forecast the Storm 2 to ship later this month.
