Flip Mino HD revamp brings 2hr video, larger screen

updated 12:00 am EDT, Wed October 14, 2009

Flip Video unveils Flip Mino HD 120min

Flip Video today countered the threat of the iPod nano as a camcorder by launching a redesigned Flip Mino HD. The pocket camcorder has a sleeker, silver-hued design but focuses most on addressing gaps in its design: the new version doubles storage to 8GB, enough for two hours of video, and has a much larger 2-inch LCD (up from 1.5 inches). Other upgrades include the HDMI output from the Ultra HD as well as more responsive touch-sensitive buttons.

Software has been given a similar lift and now adds the option to share to Facebook as well as an iMovie-like Magic Movie feature that automatically edits and transitions footage into a ready-made clip. The interface has also been refined and should better organize clips.

The redesigned Mino HD will ship before the end of October and sell at the same $229 price as the original did when new. Flip Video has already price-cut the earlier design to $199 and is selling the standard definition Mino for $149, though the company hasn't said whether it will phase out either of these models.

It's tough when a dedicated video recording

device is getting smacked around by an mp3 player. At least to the point that the dedicated device has to be upgraded. I doubt if it's going to help. People seem to like all-in-one devices so they don't have to carry as much around. It's clearly not a issue of mere quality. I guess competition is good so that companies are constantly improving their products. The Flip HD really does seem like a nice product.

    Kodak Zi8 FTW

Better light sensor, anti-shake, **AUXILIARY AUDIO IN** (so you have that tinny camcorder sound if you have a mic or sound board), 1080p (naturally), 5MP Still camera, and 60FPS mode (in 720p)

Still, the nano will sell more units. Sorry Flip and Kodak, no one wants a one trick pony these days.
