HP LD4200tm brings touch and wide view

HP's large-scale introductions on Tuesday brought about one of the largest multi-touch displays available. The LD4200tm produces a 42-inch, 1080p picture but uses a combination of infrared and imaging sensors to recognize two-point gestures such as pinching to zoom. Opting for this approach is less costly than a capacitive touchscreen as it only needs to detect when light is broken rather than wire up the entire display.

It's tailored to public spaces where it can be used as an interactive map or shopping display, but it should work with operating systems that recognize touch.

Image quality is relatively good for a touchscreen this size with particularly wide 178-degree viewing angles as well as a 72 percent color gamut, a 3,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio and a 9ms pixel response time. HP draws on USB for touch input but can take video through HDMI, VGA, component, composite or S-video.

HP plans to deliver the LD4200tm in December for $2,799.
