Sony Ericcson to bring smartphones back to the US

Sony Ericsson announced it will return to the North American market with cellphone sales at the CTIA show which wraps up today. Sony Ericsson's head of developer and partner content and services, William Maggs, said in a Friday Gearlog report that the company is planning on coming back to the US market with its smartphone sales, and the XPERIA X2 is likely to lead that return. The new-gen Windows Mobile handset is being shown off at CTIA.

"We're breaking into the US smartphone market," Maggs said. "It's a major re-entry, and certainly a future priority."

Maggs also promised more smartphones are coming, including with the Android operating system as well as other Windows Mobile phones.

Sony Ericsson has sold the predecessor to the X2 in the US before, the XPERIA X1, although as a standalone device and not via any network providers. Which, if any, carriers Sony Ericsson will partner with this time around has not been mentioned.

The XPERIA X2 will ship with Windows Mobile 6.5, a 3.2-inch, 800x480 touchscreen and sport an 8.1-megapixel camera. The phone will also include Sony Ericsson's unique user interface and is being touted as offering the fastest Java virtual machine running on Windows Mobile. Pricing and availability for the XPERIA X2 remain unknown.
