Verizon lands Android deal, will allow Android Market

updated 10:30 am EDT, Tue October 6, 2009

Verizon and Google in Android pact

Google and Verizon this morning struck a deal to bring Android phones to the cell carirer's network. The two say they will "co-develop" multiple phones designed by third-party hardware makers and expect to start launching Android-based phones within the next several weeks. They also plan to include both Google- and Verizon-made apps on the phones in question.

During a conference call to discuss the deal, Verizon also made clear it will allow Android Market to remain on its devices and have access to third-party apps. The provider recently implemented a policy that insists on its own app store has required that users download app store portals like BlackBerry App World or Windows Marketplace themselves.

Google Voice will be allowed in Android Market, the company added.

At least two phones are expected to arrive on Verizon in the near future, the most likely of which is the Motorola Droid, a high-end touchscreen slider that may be unveiled by the end of this month and ship before the end of the year. The HTC Desire (or Predator) is also slated to appear soon.

The addition of Android leaves only AT&T without an Android device currently on offer, although it too is expected to pick up the platform with the eventual release of the HTC Lancaster or a similar model. Android is now approach its first year of sales and for the first several months struggled but is now available through multiple phone designers and on several major networks.

I guess if the Android Market is allowed...

if the iPhone comes to Verizon, then the App Store apps would be allowed. iPhones unlikely won't be crippled by Verizon. I think any carrier that wants iPhones will have to take whatever Apple says they should take. That is superior bargaining power. I doubt if Apple will be bringing the iPhone to Verizon any time soon.

    agreed and...

It's nice to see Verizon opening their network up a tad.

It would be nice if the iPhone were available with Verizon, but I agree that won't be happening any time soon. Then again, Verizon has so many new phones coming out in the next few months, that I am not sure if it matters.

Personally, the iPhone form factor is getting old for me. There's nothing wrong with it, but I do like to have a different product every few years.
