Hardware upgrades enable integrated apps

Novatel is set to upgrade its MiFi pocket router with expanded support for a variety of apps. The new features, such as Eye-Fi and VPN utilities, utilize an applications processor found in the European MiFi 2352 and the MiFi 2372 distributed through AT&T and Rogers in North America.

Nomadesk has developed software that allows the MiFi to work as a NAS device. Content stored on an inserted microSD card can be made available to any users connected via Wi-Fi, or it can be synced to cloud-based storage systems.

Alcatel-Lucent has created a package of security apps geared for businesses. The app will automatically install patches and the latest anti-virus information.

Eye-Fi integration will allow users to automatically upload images to web-based portals. Pictures can be transferred to the MiFi via Wi-Fi for storage, and then uploaded to the Internet over a 3G connection.

The added functionality will initially be available through AT&T and Rogers, while a T-Mobile version is expected further down the road. MiFi 2200 devices, currently sold through Sprint and Verizon, lack the hardware specs required for the new apps. Novatel has invited additional developers to join its MiFi Developer Program.
